Maintaining a polished professional image is an ongoing quest. So, I have created a blog for you to see the professional image challenges I am seeing "out there" and give you a chance to share some of the challenges that you have seen or may even be facing yourself.

Having a professional image is more than clothing and accessories. A professional image is also about having confidence. Not just confidence in your ability to do the job, confidence, also, in your ability to reach your goals, network both within and outside of your workplace; the confidence to seek guidance when you need it and the confidence to present yourself to others.

A professional image includes ancillary items as well. These include anything that can put you in a professional light or detract away from any perception of image. These ancillary items would include business cards. How many times have you gotten a business card that is tattered, torn, written on or scratched out? Did you think, ‘she must be down to her last card’ or did you think, simply, ‘how tacky’? And the card doesn’t have to be beat-up to adversely affect your professional image. It can simply be poorly designed; printed at home using low resolution or using perforated cards instead of clean edge cards. Even using distorted images on the card can have an adverse affect on your professional image.

So, what can you do to make sure your image stands up to your professional standards? Take a professional image assessment. Are you able to show your bosses that you can set and reach your career goals? Are you comfortable and confident walking into a room of peers, even if you’ve never met them? Do your business cards or brochures stand up to your definition of professional image? Are you dressed in a professional manner?

If you answered “yes” to all of these questions, then you are golden and so is your professional image! On the other hand, if you answered “no” to even one of these questions, your professional image may be on shaky ground.
